Hi, I’m Stephen England. An Englishman in New York, a dedicated runner, and one of almost 3 million in the US who just happens to live with type 1 diabetes.
May 1994; my world came crashing down at 14 years old. No, actually, that was just me fainting when the nurse told me “you have type 1 diabetes”. After a week of significant weight loss, lack of appetite, frequent thirst, urination and a desert forming in my mouth, you would think I would have been relieved to find out what was wrong with me. No, I just became more scared. All I knew about diabetes was it involved injections and I hate injections! I questioned how my life would, from this day forward, completely change.
May 2012; my diabetes is well controlled, I am in the best shape of my life and will be running my first ever 100 mile race this August at the famous Leadville Trail 100 in the Colorado Rockies. Completely change? Only for the better!
rundiabetes.com is my blog to share all things running and diabetes. “I run diabetes, diabetes does not run me”.
